Here’s what I found yesterday:

  • The Sabbatical | design mind – "A recuperative sabbatical is the most needed and the most practical. It is often unplanned and occurs only after the “sabbatee” reaches a breaking point — brought on by a chaotic workplace atmosphere of on-demand innovation, parallel work streams‚ and always-on digital lifestyles. The pressure to constantly over-deliver under budget is causing us to lose our ability to control and channel our energy in positive ways. We’re burned out on work we once loved because we’ve run out of room for randomness, spontaneity, and serendipity — all of which are crucial to creativity and innovation. Often the only mode of repair is to desperately, suddenly take a week off (instead of quitting or running screaming from the building)."
  • Searching for Value in Ludicrous Ideas | design mind – Johnson riffs easily on workspace concepts but, as he explains, doesn’t “actually think there are solutions to the present-day work-life dilemma! Not easy ones at least. It is too easy for me to satirize and lampoon the situations that might occur, and so I have provided methods for adopting a frantic compromise, a kind of Quick Office, built into walls or in the form of a cart that you move from room to room, pull down the shades, and become off-limits to the family.”
  • The surprising truth about what motivates us (video) – Core77 – In the social benefit sector, we often think we can't compete because we can't offer enough money. We aren't emphasizing the right benefits.

  • Elements Of Twitter Style (Red Sweater Blog) – Excellent.
  • Organizing Armageddon: What We Learned From the Haiti Earthquake – "Despite the massive scale of their operations, only in recent years have the people who deliver disaster aid begun to benefit from the kind of data-driven decisionmaking and rigorous academic study that their commercial and military counterparts rely on. In the past decade, the responses to major disasters have been analyzed in hundreds of case studies and pored over by experts, their conclusions field-tested in subsequent crises where yet more data is collected. Learning the right lessons could not be more important: The stakes are literally life and death."
  • Scott Brown on How Twitter + Dopamine = Better Humans | Magazine – "Our brains release congratulatory hits of dopamine when we engage in selfless behavior — which we’re moved to do the instant we witness something awful. Melissa Brown, associate director of research at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, calls this our 'immediate altruistic response.' But, she notes, the IAR impulse is easily blunted by delay: 'Generation X and the Millennials don’t want to go through the trouble of entering a 16-digit credit card number to make a $25 donation.'"

  • Constructive Disruption Can Drive Social Change (Microsoft On The Issues) – "But today’s technologies have potential to do much more – the potential for “constructive disruption” that enables nonprofits to achieve dramatically greater impact through new business and service models."
  • OpenGov APIs: Interfacing with Open Government (Gov 2.0) – "Standards for open data and APIs will make it easier for developers to build things – an app that works for one municipality can work for others if both adhere to a common standard that the app can run against. But they’ll also make it easier for governments to open up their data – standards will offer governments assurance that the time and effort they expend to maintain and publish data or stand up APIs will provide the most return on investment."
  • Crowdsourcing #SOCIALMEDIA NONPROFIT tweet | Janet Fouts – a book of twitter sized tips and tricks. from a variety of experts.
  • Ford Foundation Grants to Aid Art Spaces and Housing (NYTimes.com) – "In addition to helping arts groups build new spaces and renovate and expand old ones, the latest initiative aims to encourage the construction of affordable housing for artists in or around some of these spaces and to spur economic development in their surrounding areas. Mr. Ubiñas said that during his travels around the country he had been astonished when he would visit an arts organization and find that 'all around it have developed whole neighborhoods — of artists and their families, of businesses that cater to them, of diverse people who want to live in a thriving community.'"

  • Apps 4 Ben's
  • Google Fiber for Communities: Think big with a gig – "Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people."
  • USAID Online Event March 29-31, 2010 (Jayne Blog) – "Now, there's another way to get involved with USAID, via their three day Global Pulse 2010, March 29 – 31, 2010. The goal is to bring together individual socially-engaged participants and organizations from around the world. The feedback generated during the event will inform U.S. foreign assistance and diplomatic strategies on major themes and ideas."
