- Yahoo! will always be open
- Yahoo! wants to make sure that people can do what they want; give them the tools to share and engage in ways that are meaningful for them
- Can Open Source Stay Open
- Model will change to customer self-service—people will be able to access the service they need but not necessarily by licensed software; open source lows the burden of being able to use something for a relatively quick turnaround effort.
- Reason it can keep going is because it can access the interests and talents of a community (greasemonkey)
- Baker: Firefox popular because it makes it easy to try things out
- idea of extensibility important (isn’t that more about open APIs and an ease of adding in plug-ins or 3rd party apps and less about open source per se?)
- Schwartz: the power of open source is in the community and building a community that can contribute to the future success of a project
- Schwartz: power of distribution shifting to innovation, quality and *community*.
- Schwartz: communication is a critical way of creating community; transparency is a competitive weapon
