I keep telling mysef (and writing in my to do list) that I’m going to write up the various tools that I’m using on my Mac but then, you know, work and kids get in the way.
But then a tool pops through the meta todo list to be something that I’ve just got to write about right now at this red hot second.
TextExpander is just such a tool.
On Windows, I was big fan of ActiveWords and I hadn’t quite found anything to replace it. Sure, Quicksilver offers me some of the functionality — particularly relating to quickly opening applications at just the right spot to begin using it right away. But I missed the easy text replacement.
And that’s the itch that TextExpander scratches.
I can fill it with the things I write all the time — from the my .sig to a longer note introducing people or the org I work for or the kinds of questions I find myself answering over and over. Once I figured out that I really did have to the follow the instruction that told me to enable assistive devices (and that took longer than you’d think given that the instruction is in red and all) it’s been a little piece of the computing dream living on my MacBook.
