Oct 27, 12:44 am: There's tagging and then there's tagging

In Tags and Web 2.0, the East Coast Michael Stein writes about the benefits of social bookmarking, tagging and names two tools in particular:  del.icio.us and technorati

Now, this shouldn’t surprise y’all but I’m in favor of tagging. Way in favor.  It’s easy.  It’s ad hoc.  It’s quick and, for me and my brain, it works very, very well.

But the tagging that happens on del.icio.us and the tagging that happens on technorati are very different.  One is about tagging other—bookmarks for example—the other is about tagging yourself—blog posts.  Very different kinds of knowledge comes from the two.

  1. A good way to get an idea of the different places that support tagging is to do a few searches at http://tagcentral.net

Though that isn’t the best looking or fastest site, it’s an interesting proof of concept.
